Benthic macrofaunal bioturbation activities from shelf to deep basin in spring to summer transition in the Arctic Ocean ArchiMer
Oleszczuk, Barbara; Michaud, Emma; Morata, Nathalie; Renaud, Paul E.; Kędra, Monika.
The aim of this study was to assess bioturbation rates in relation to macrozoobenthos and environmental variables in the Svalbard fjords, Barents Sea and Nansen Basin during spring to summer transition. The results showed differences in benthic community structure across sampled area in relation to sediment type and phytopigment content. Fjords, Barents Sea and the shallow parts of Nansen Basin (<400 m) were characterized by high functional groups diversity, and by biodiffusive and non-local rates ranging from 0.05 to 1.75 cm−2 y−1 and from 0.2 to 3.2 y−1, respectively. The deeper parts of Nansen Basin, dominated by conveyors species, showed only non-local transport rates (0.1–1 y−1). Both coefficients intensity varied with benthic biomass. Non-local...

Comparative analysis of long-term alteration in structural organization of zoobenthos under permanent anthropogenic impact (Case study: Sevastopol Bay, Crimea). IBSS Repository
Revkov, N. K.; Petrov, A. N.; Kolesnikova, E. A.; Dobrotina, G. A..
The results of benthic survey of soft bottoms in the Sevastopol bay had been performed in 2001 are presented. This bay is under permanent technogenic impact and is being considered as one of the most polluted areas along the coastal part of Crimea. The peculiarities of quantitative development of macrobenthic assemblages were characterized, and taxa which define the structural organization of assemblages were distinguished. In spite of strong influence of technogenic pollution, Sevastopol bay can be attributed to faunistically rich areas of Crimean coast and the Black Sea at whole. Using the methods of multivariate statistical analysis, suites of 7 – 8 environmental variables (from the 32 ones considered in the analysis) that best explained the observed...

Contribution to a synopsis of marine species richness in the Pertuis Charentais Sea with new insights in soft-bottom macrofauna of the Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, Xavier; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
The catalogue of soft-bottom macrofauna in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (French Atlantic coast) has been updated from a benthic survey conducted in April-May 1995. 262 stations were selected using a stratified random strategy based on sediment types and bathymetric levels. 231 soft-bottom macrofauna species were identified. A synopsis of all available literature since the first local marine study published in 1710 by Antoine Ferchauld de Reaumur indicated that 60 benthic species were reported in the Marennes-Oleron Bay for the first time. The sampling effort, i.e. more than 1 station per km(2) and size of the sieving square mesh (1 mm), can partially explain these results. Most of the new recorded species were crustaceans (28 species) and polychaete annelids...

Impact of the Phaeocystis globosa spring bloom on the intertidal benthic compartment in the eastern English Channel: A synthesis ArchiMer
Spilmont, Nicolas; Denis, Lucie; Artigas, Luis Felipe; Caloin, Frederic; Courcot, Lucie; Creach, Anne; Desroy, Nicolas; Gevaert, Francois; Hacquebart, Pascal; Hubas, Cedric; Janquin, Marie-andree; Lemoine, Yves; Luczak, Christophe; Migne, Aline; Rauch, Mathieu; Davoult, Dominique.
From 1999 to 2005, studies carried out in the frame of regional and national French programs aimed to determine whether the Phaeocystis globosa bloom affected the intertidal benthic communities of the French coast of the eastern English Channel in terms of composition and/or functioning. Study sites were chosen to cover most of the typical shore types encountered on this coast (a rocky shore, an exposed sandy beach and a small estuary). Both the presence of active Phaeocystis cells and their degradation product (foam) did have a significant impact on the studied shores. The primary production and growth rates of the kelp Saccharina latissima decreased during the bloom because of a shortage of fight and nutrient for the macroalgae. On sandy sediments, the...

Macrobenthic community structure in a Brazilian chocked lagoon system under environmental stress Rev. Bras. Zool.
Mendes,Carla Lima Torres; Soares-Gomes,Abilio.
Saquarema-Jaconé lagoonal system (SJLS) comprises a sequence of five interconnected shallow brackish lagoons with access to the sea by a single permanent tidal channel. It is a eutrophic system, receiving constant input of organic load from its urbanized catchments. The relationship between several environmental variables and the spatial-temporal distribution of the benthic macrofauna was assessed during four seasonal samplings (dry and wet periods of 2007-2009). Sediment replicates were sampled at seven sites for biological identification and analyzes of organic matter, carbonates, phytopigments, grain size and heavy metals. Salinity, dissolved oxygen and redox potential were measured in situ. SJLS was characterized by sandy bottoms with very reducing...

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal...

Prédation par les limicoles de la macrofaune intertidale en baie de Saint-Brieuc. Projet EUPHORBE. ArchiMer
Annezo, Jean-pierre; Hamon, Dominique.
The object of this report is to provide an estimation, on an annual basis, of the macrozoobenthic biomass consumed by the major wading birds staying in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Brittany, Western Channel). Historical information was first reviewed and then updated throughout the winter 1987-88, by field observations (counts of birds, birds activities ... ). Six species account for most of the predation on macrofauna, and are thus studied with more detail. A specific survey is devoted to oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), because of its feeding on an exploited stock of the edible cockle (Cerastoderma edule).

Proposal of a sluice-type fish pass Neotropical Ichthyology
Haselbauer,Matthias A.; Martinez,Carlos Barreira.
One-dimensional design of fish passes often leads to an unsatisfying solution. The problems are due to insufficient, if not completely missing, collaboration between biologists and civil engineers. In the present paper, a new type of fish pass is presented. A labyrinth flux develops in a system of sequential sluices and baffles in between, which uncouple the supercritical flow of the single sluices. A series of biological, hydraulic and numerical experiments was carried out in order to investigate the optimum configuration in terms of geometric issues, regarding the biological needs and performances of organisms to be transported. Following this optimization, fish can control the prevailing flow conditions quite well. Because the air entrainment into the...

Sensitivities of marine macrozoobenthos to environmental pressures in the Netherlands Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Loon, W.M.G.M. van.
The relative sensitivities of 309 common invertebrate species in Dutch marine waters are presented for environmental and anthropogenic pressures like organic enrichment, sedimentation and fisheries. The species were furthermore appointed to trophic groups like suspension and deposit feeders. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment uses these data when calculating the Benthic Ecosystem Quality Index 2 and the Infaunal Trophic Index. These metrics aid in the mandatory monitoring of ecological quality for example for the European Water Framework Directive. The common Dutch species were selected based on their abundance according to, 1. the mwtl dataset including results of on-going monitoring programs issued by the Ministry, 2. the...

Анализ долговременных изменений разнообразия бентоса в бухте Лисья (юго-восточное побережье Крыма) IBSS Repository
Мазлумян, С. А.; Болтачева, Н. А.; Колесникова, Е. А..
